EFE: Mr. Vargas Llosa and Mr. Carlos Herrera win the King of Spain Prizes

The Nobel Prize in Literature Mr. Mario Vargas Llosa and the Journalist Mr. Carlos Herrera have been awarded today the “Don Quixote” Journalism Prize and the King of Spain Ibero-American Journalism Prize, respectively.
Furthermore, this 33rd series of the King of Spain International Journalism Prizes recognized the work made by well-known professionals from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Portugal and Uruguay in the six categories for these Prizes, which are organized by the Spanish state-owned news agency AGENCIA EFE and by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECID).
Mr. Vargas Llosa was awarded the “Don Quixote” Prize for his article 'Cusco en el tiempo', which was published by the El País daily on January 11th, 2015, in which he tells about his experiences in that city after several years since his last visit.
The jury awarded to Mr. Herrera the Ibero-American Journalism Prize for the elegance which he displayed on his article 'Zabludovsky', published in the daily ABC on July 3rd, 2015.
On the other hand, the work 'Quem é o filho que António Deixou na guerra' about the children born from the liaisons between former Portuguese soldiers while serving in Portugal’s colonial war and African women, signed by the Portuguese Ms. Catarina Gomes, won the King of Spain Prize for the Press category. It was published by the Portuguese daily Público on June 21st, 2015.
The Brazilian Ms. Márcia Foletto won the Photography Prize with one image from a series of photos about poverty in Río de Janeiro, 'Os miseráveis' (The Wretched Ones), which was published by the daily 'O Globo' on May 31st, 2015.
The Television Prize, which was broadcasted on June 15th, 205, was for the TV report 'Kalungas: as eternas escravas', about women’s sexual exploitation, broadcasted by the Brazilian network Rede Record and which was made by a team led by Mr. Marcelo Magalhaes.
The Radio Prize was for a program which denounces the killing and abuses suffered by women in Bolivia, and which was broadcasted by Radio Fides under the title 'Feminicidio y violencia contra la mujer en Bolivia', and which was made by Mr. Abdel Padilla Vargas and Mr. José Luis Mendoza. It was broadcasted as part of the program 'Plaza Municipal' on November 8th, 2014.
Digital Journalism Prize
The Uruguayan Mr. Jerónimo Giorgi Boero won the Digital Journalism Prize for a work on technological development in Africa titled 'Connecting Africa', and which was published on the digital edition of El Periódico on June 28th, 2015.
As for the Environmental Journalism Prize, it went to the news report 'Mercurio, un monstruo dormido en Antioquia', published by the digital daily elcolombiano.com on November 24th, 2014 and which was made by the Colombians Mr. Santiago Cárdenas Herrera and Mr. Manuel Saldarriaga Quintero.
Each one of these Prizes, which are sponsored by the international construction and licensee group OHL, is endowed with 6,000 € and with one bronze sculpture from the artist Mr. Joaquín Vaquero Turcios, while the Prize for Environmental Journalism is sponsored by the Fundación Aquae.
The “Don Quixote” Journalism Prize, sponsored by the Spanish state-owned Tragsa, is endowed with 9,000 € and with one commemorative sculpture.
