Developing one 'Live Coverage System” is the goal of the project which will be carried out by Sourcefabric and AGENCIA EFE within the framework of the so-called Google 'Digital News Initiative' (Google DNI).
The project was selected for receiving financing from the DNI in the category of intermediate projects in the first phase for selecting journalistic innovation proposals, which has just been made public.
The 'Live Coverage System”, as the project is known, and which has in Sourcefabric its main technological partner, seeks to promote a media consortium which takes advantage of the digital journalistic business opportunities regarding the coverage of high-profile issues in real time.
In keeping with the initiative conditions, the software to be used in the platform will be of the open source type, so that the organizations which make use of it can adapt it to their needs.
This journalistic collaboration initiative at European level would extend to other organizations in the industry beyond news agencies.
On line market for coverage in real time
Through this technology it is sought to promote an “online” market for covering events in real time, to which might gain access other media in order to improve their live broadcasts.
Another of the project’s goals consists in promoting higher-quality journalistic contents, and besides the media taking part in the platform will be able to monetize their contents through new ways for raising income in the current news market, one in which internet and the new technologies are putting everything upside down.
The project from Sourcefabric and EFE was selected from the more than 1,200 projects which had been submitted for this first financing phase by Google’s Fund for Innovation within the framework of the DNI program, which will award 150 Million Euros in three years, for promoting a high quality and innovative journalism in Europe.
The total number of initiatives selected in this first stage reached 128, from 23 European countries, and which will receive a total of 27 Million Euros.
DNI has three financing categories: Prototype projects (up to 50,000 €), middle-sized projects (up to 300,000 € of financing, and large projects (up to 1 Million €).
