NAVANTIA and Iberdrola celebrate the ceremony for the delivery of the first jackets for the Wikinger offshore wind farm

  • The event was attended by the President of the regional Government of Galicia, and by the CEOs of Iberdrola and of NAVANTIA

Iberdrola and NAVANTIA celebrated today the delivery ceremony of the first jacket-type foundations for the Wikinger offshore farm park and which have been built at the Fene shipyard by the consortium made up by NAVANTIA-Windar.

The event was attended, among others, by the President of the regional Government of Galicia, Mr. Alberto Núñez Feijóo; by Iberdrola’s Chairman, Mr. Ignacio Sánchez Galán, and by NAVANTIA’s Chairman, Mr. José Manuel Revuelta.

In this way, during August work will continue for the delivery of the pending components and the contract signed on December 18th, 2014 between both companies will be successfully concluded. This contract has involved the construction and on board delivery of 29 jacket-class structures and of 116 piles at the Fene shipyard and at Windar’s facilities in Avilés. The project has entailed for the Ferrol Inlet around 650,000 hours of work, which have translated into the generation of about 2,000 jobs (both direct and indirect jobs).

During the act, which took place at the facilities of the shipyards which NAVANTIA has in Fene, both Chairmen manifested their satisfaction with the work made and the fulfillment of the contract, both in terms of quality and deadlines.

Iberdrola’s Chairman, Mr. Galán highlighted Iberdrola’s tractor effect for Spanish companies thanks to this renewable energy project, stating that “The Wikinger offshore wind farm constitutes an emblematic project for Iberdrola, because on it converge the main axes of our strategy: the strong commitment with renewable energies and with technological innovation, the internationalization and the contribution to economic development and job generation on those territories on which we are present. We are very satisfied that in our international expansion we are in the company of our Spanish suppliers, to whom we facilitate the access to new markets and businesses”.

Mr. Revuelta highlighted that “this contract positions NAVANTIA as a reference constructor of offshore structures for offshore wind farms, a growing industry in Europe, mostly in the United Kingdom and in Germany. Besides, it allows NAVANTIA to diversify its offer and provide workload in a field which supplements the shipbuilding industry”.

Electricity for 350,000 households

The Wikinger offshore wind farm, on which 1,400 M€ are being invested, is being developed by Iberdrola on the Baltic Sea, where depth ranges between 37 and 43 meters. The site covers an area of around 34 km2, on which the Company envisages installing 70 wind power generators, each with power capacity of 5 MW, and one offshore substation.

With its 350 MW capacity, Wikinger will generate, when it begins to operate in late 2017 enough power for covering the electricity needs of more than 350,000 German households, thus preventing the emission to the atmosphere of almost 6,000 CO2 Tons per year.

In the project are collaborating with Iberdrola companies from several countries, which are in charge of supplying to Iberdrola with the world’s most advanced equipment, technology, and services, and which have been selected after winning highly contested international bids.

Characteristics of the jackets

Each jacket is made up by a lattice structure which ends into a transition piece which joins it up to the tower of the wind turbine. The corresponding pilots which anchor it to the sea bottom are included in the agreement between Iberdrola and NAVANTIA-Windar.

  • Weight of the jacket: 630 Tons.
  • Height: 62 meters.
  • Footprint: 25 x 25 meters.
  • Weight of the piles: 350 Tons.
  • Total steel used: 27,350 Tons.
