NAVANTIA welcomed today at the Puerto Real Shipyard the visit of the Minister for Employment and the Social Security, Ms. Fátima Báñez. The reason of the visit was that of knowing about the status of the Wikinger project for Iberdrola, which is entering into its final stage.

The contract was signed by NAVANTIA and Iberdrola on December 2014, and it has entailed for the Cadiz Bay around 650,000 hours of work, which means on average 600/700 jobs in the area.

The Wikinger program involves the construction of one electric substation for the offshore wind farm which Iberdrola is developing on German waters of the Baltic Sea. It is made up by six piles, each with a weight of 270 Tons, one 2,400 Ton jacket, and two Top-Side modules, which host all the equipment, of 5,500 Tons. This is a great renewable energies project, which enters into its final stage and which is the most advanced which Iberdrola is carrying out currently within this sector.

The Minister checked the status of construction both of the substation and of the foundation which will fix it up to the sea bottom. The goal of the first will be that of receiving and transforming the electricity generated to the voltage required for transmitting it to the electricity grid on the mainland.

The Wikinger wind farm

The Wikinger wind farm will require the investment of around 1,400 M€, will be located some 75 kilometers from the German coast, where the sea depth ranges between 37 and 43 meters. The 350 Megawatts (MW) of this wind power facility will produce, once they enter into service in mid-2017, enough energy for covering the electricity needs of more than 350,000 German households, preventing the emission to the atmosphere of almost 600,000 Tons of CO2 each year.

This infrastructure will have a length of 22 meters and a width of 22 meters, and it will be made up by two platforms with a weight of more than 4,800 Tons. These will be located, in turn, on a foundation which will be anchored to the sea bottom through six piles, each with a height of 50 meters and with a weight of around 2,400 Tons.

Located facing the German island of Rugen, this wind farm will occupy an area of some 34 square kilometers, on which Iberdrola envisages to install 70 wind power generators, each with a 5 MW power capacity.

NAVANTIA’s work at Puerto Real is already nearing its final stage, meeting the agreed deadlines, and it is envisaged that the transport of the substation by ship to Germany will take place in August.
