EFE commemorates its 75th anniversary with an exhibition of photographs in Asunción

Visitors to the Shopping del Sol, Asunción’s biggest shopping mall, can watch from today some of the most emblematic photographs from AGENCIA EFE, which celebrates its 75th anniversary with this exhibition, and also with a larger one, which will be inaugurated at the cultural center Juan de Salazar.

The images are part of the 17 Million photographs which Agencia EFE stores up, and which constitute a historical graphic record, mostly of Latin America’s history.

The exhibition at the shopping mall, which will stay open until November 30th, at the vestibule on the second floor, includes 13 photographs from the 75 which make up the exhibition at the cultural center, which next Thursday will be inaugurated by Mr. José Antonio Vera, the news agency’s Chairperson, and by Mr. Diego Bermejo, the Spanish Ambassador at Asunción.

The Exhibition’s images

Among them is an image of coup d’état attempted by the Lieutenant Coronel Antonio Tejero at the Spanish Parliament on February 23rd, 1981, which was taken by Mr. Manuel P. Barriopedro.

Other impressive photograph shows some youngsters making the Nazi salute in front of the coffin of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in 2006, from the photograph Ian Salas.

Among the images from Paraguay is one taken by Mr. Patric Kraemer showing the Paraguayan international soccer player Mr. Roque Santa Cruz - who has played one hundred times with the national soccer team - in midflight ahead of his rivals at a soccer match against Greece which took place in 2010.

There are also photographs of the procession of the Virgen de Caacupé, one of the largest Marian celebrations in Latin America, taken by Mr. Andrés Cristaldo in 2011, and of the Cateura Orchestra of Recycled instruments, which has travelled all around the world with its melodies taken from discarded materials, taken this year by Mr. Sergio Berrenechea.

EFE´s first office in Paraguay in 1967

Agencia EFE was born on January 3rd, 1939 at an office in a residential building in the Spanish town of Burgos, and in Paraguay its presence goes back to 1967. From its modest origins it has become in the fourth largest news agency in the world and the first in the Spanish language.

Its three Thousand professionals from 60 nationalities are present in 120 countries and they produce every year three Million news items on text, video, photography, audio and multimedia supports. Agencia has editorial teams in Madrid, Bogotá, Cairo (Arabic) and Río de Janeiro (Portuguese).

With the aim of celebrating its three quarters of a century, the news agency has organized this year photography exhibitions in a number of towns and cities in Spain and Latin America.

The exhibition at the cultural center Salazar will stay open until November 28th, and admission is free. The exhibition is sponsored by the multinational FCC, and it has also benefited from the collaboration of Grupo Arcallana, Prosegur, Rochester, Buró Creativo, BBVA and Iberia. The inauguration ceremony is supported by Meet&cheese and Mahou.
