Photographs

Since its first years in operation, the Instituto requested its companies to submit collections of photos which are representative of the industrial facilities or of significant public events, periodically requesting their update.

These photos were used for making known INI’s activities to other institutions, in INI’s publications, at trade fairs and exhibitions.

With the aim of preserving the original material and making known the photo collection, 5,427 images of facilities, factories, works, products, services, institutional events, etc. corresponding to a number of INI’s companies, have been digitalized; these images span from 1950 to the eighties.
It is possible to have a direct access for consulting the photo collection.

The downloaded images will be privately used and exclusively for teaching or research purposes, for any other use it is required SEPI’s specific authorization (request for making use of images).

Films

The industrial films produced by INI about its companies’ activities shared the informative and propagandistic aim of the photographs.

Their theme could be either about the technical processes carried out at the factories, or about the activities or the facilities of a company or of several companies grouped together on the basis of industrial sectors in which INI took part.

The films were made from the forties until the eighties, although most of the collection corresponds to the fifties and sixties.

Many of these films were directed by Mr. Luis Suárez de Lezo y López Altamirano, a key person in the development of the documentaries in his capacity as manager of INI’s Graphical Information Service from 1954 to 1963.

INI’s film collection are kept in the Filmoteca Española (FE) for their preservation and making them available to the scientific community and citizens.

Cataloging, inspection, and restoration of INI’s film collection

SEPI began a process for the recovery, inventory, and restoration of this collection with the “Cataloging, inspection, and restoration of the documentary collection owned by SEPI and kept at the Filmoteca Española” project, which entailed collaborating with the Filmoteca Española and TRAGSATEC. It took place from 2019 to 2021 and had an initial financial aid from the Bank of Spain.

It has entailed the cataloging of 134 titles and 456 materials and the inspection and cataloging of 726 roll films, resulting in a complete inventory-catalogue of the cinematographic films and materials which are part of the “INI film collection”.

Digital preservation

This project has involved the restoration and digitalization of nine titles, which entail 120 minutes.

As in the case of the photographs, the use of films for any other purpose than teaching or research requires SEPI’s express authorization (request for making use of images).
