• The first actions will be focused on the fishing and stockbreeding industries, towards the achievement of the new Sustainable Development Goals

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations Organization and Grupo TRAGSA signed yesterday in Rome a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) defining a new and ambitious collaboration framework, focused on achieving the goals shared by both organizations.

The Agreement concluded, with an initial duration of three years, will contribute to making agriculture, forestry, and fishing more productive and sustainable; as well as for giving place to a favorable environment for the setup of integrative and efficient farming and food systems, “in which the experience accumulated by Grupo TRAGSA can provide a significant added value”, stated the Group’s Chairman, Mr. Miguel Giménez de Córdoba, during the signing ceremony of the agreement. 

“Both organizations share a common interest in improving all the actions focused on achieving world food security”, declared Mr. Daniel J. Gustafson, FAO’s Deputy Director-General during the event.

Actions in fishing and stockbreeding

The first actions will focus on the fishing and stockbreeding industries, with the goal of identifying synergies which contribute to the materialization of specific activities focused on achieving the new Sustainable Development Goals.

These first steps will open the door to new opportunities. “We already have the framework for a better use of our compatible capabilities, the essential tools for facilitating the achievement of the important goals which without any doubt, are shared by us”, pointed out the Chairman.

“We need interdisciplinary and innovative solutions, as well as sharing the scientific and technological progress”, said Mr. Gustafson, with regard to the technical cooperation which is being setup between the FAO and Grupo TRAGSA, which will collaborate in facilitating the adoption of the technologies which are suitable for supporting the sustainable increase of the farming, fishind, and forestry production in the developing countries.

The Group’s delegation, made up by, besides the Chairman, by the Secretary-General, Mr. José Manuel Díez, and by the Manager in charge of International Prospection, Mr. Carlos Ramos, was assisted by the Spanish Ambassador to Italy and permanent representative before the FAO, Mr. Francisco Javier Elorza.

TRAGSA and Grupo SEPI

TRAGSA belongs to Grupo SEPI, a corporate holding which includes a total of 16 state-owned companies in which it has direct, majority shareholding participations, with a workforce of around 73,000 professionals in 2014; the Spanish state-owned television and radio corporation, Corporación Radiotelevisión Española, which is attached to SEPI, and one public foundation. Equally, SEPI has direct minority shareholdings in a further ten companies, and indirect shareholdings in more than one hundred companies.
